Welcome to your Premium Starter Kit! As you probably already know, the Young Living (YL) Premium Starter Kit is the best way to get going with essential oils and plant-based wellness. But it can also be a bit overwhelming at first! In this post, I am going to give you the 101 on each oil, a few tips on using it, and some usage information. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.
One of the best recommendations I received was to spend a day with each oil. Read about it, smell it, use it in a few ways, invite it into your life. If we only smell them from the bottle, we’re missing out of their full offerings! I smelled a few and backed away at first, not realizing what to use some of them for (hence, what lead me to do this research). In two weeks you’ll be an “expert beginner” for sure! I know some of you are already familiar with a few of these, but some of the YL-specific ones may need a bit of explanation. Once you master the basics, there is a whole next level you can get into as well (e.g., total wellness support, switching out your home products, etc).
Quick Essential Oils Refresher. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years but are finally becoming more mainstream. The first time I had ever heard of oils in church singing "We Three Kings of Orient Are" which is a solid testament to their age and use (one of the three kings brought Frankincense to Baby Jesus), with many more biblical references to a number of oils and blends.
The best way to explain essential oils is to think about when you take a peppermint leaf (or any plant) and rub the leaves between your fingers. That smell that you get, that is the essential oil of the plant. The essential oil can be obtained from roots, trees, seeds, shrubs, flowers, bark or leaves. It's said to be the lifeblood of the plant, protecting it from disease, harm, and injury.
The chemistry of an essential oil is extremely complex and could consist of hundreds of different chemical compounds, all of which are super interesting (and a bit over my head). Essential oils help eliminate toxins in our body and help support each of our body systems: nervous, muscular, digestive, immune, reproductive, lymphatic, etc. Within minutes of using an essential oil, topically, aromatically, or internally, they can be found in every organ of your body. They can provide physical and emotional support when diffused, purifying and oxygenating the air. The ability of essential oils to act on both the mind and the body is what makes them truly unique.
Three ways to use your oils: There are three common ways to use these powerful oils throughout your day and night. Depending on your preferences, you will soon find the method that suits you the best.
↣ The first way essential oils can be a benefit to you is through AROMATIC use. When you are inhaling the aroma of oils, you are processing the benefits through the olfactory system. The olfactory bulb transmits impulses to parts of your brain, including where taste is perceived, where emotional memories are stored and other parts of the limbic system. Because the limbic system is directly connected to parts of the brain that control heart rate, memory, stress levels and the like, essential oils can have a profound effects. There are certain oils that promote feelings of relaxation, alertness, concentration, and so on. Most use a diffuser, but you can also simply inhale from the bottle or a fun diffuser charm.
↣ Next, you get the benefits of essential oils by using them TOPICALLY. Essential oils are very quickly absorbed into the skin and dispersed throughout the body. Simply adding a drop or two on specific areas will help you target benefits where needed most. Depending on the oil potency, some will require a carrier oil (e.g., jojoba, coconut, almond) and roller bottle. Always skin test before using & never use in ears/eyes. Another great use is in the 🛁 mixed with epsom salts.
↣ Some Young Living essential oils (Vitality line) are cleared for INGESTING, which is another amazing way to experience benefits. For example, Citrus oils are a great addition to your daily water intake. (Oilers always recommend using glass to drink your citrus oils, as the components of the oils can break down plastics.) Be sure to read labels and check your usage guides for amounts & safety info.
🍃A typical application of Young Living Essential oils is 1-4 drops and there are 75-100 drops {per 5mL bottle} in each bottle that is included in the Premium Starter Kit.🍃

LAVENDER
Lavender is universally regarded as one the most powerful and versatile essential oils. It offers a sweet floral aroma that is amazing at creating a balanced, calm and relaxing environment. It has also been documented to improve concentration and mental acuity, increasing your sense of vitality and helping you think more clearly. All of these benefits can help you move through feelings of anxiety, tension, restlessness and stress. 💜Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins (although many do dilute this oil).🧸A couple drops in your diffuser before bed or nap times. Bathing your child in a warm bath with a few drops of lavender, and also lightly spraying their pillowcase with lavender can help them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.🧴Add 1-2 drops to your moisturizer to enhance skin radiance.🏖Create an after-sun spray (sunburn relief!) with a small spray bottle of water and 4 drops lavender and 4 drops peppermint.

PEPPERMINT
Peppermint has a fresh energizing aroma and is one of oldest and most highly regarded herbs for supporting healthy digestion. It is great for flavoring drinks or food, and can also help promote healthy intestinal function. Whenever you see "Vitality" on a YL bottle, these are safe for ingestion (just check for dosage recommendations as some of these are quite strong). YL is THE ONLY oil brand that is FDA approved for food safe. 🌱 Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 4 drops carrier oil.🍕For digestive discomfort, dilute Peppermint with a carrier oil in a roller bottle and apply to the area (upset stomach, heartburn) and you’ll start to notice relief very quickly. Or you can simply inhale the aroma directly from the bottle.👀Diffuse Peppermint for an amazing for a quick pick me up. Whenever you are tired or just dragging in the afternoon, peppermint is what you should use.💆 Peppermint is incredible for headaches. If you feel a headache coming on, put peppermint & carrier oil blend on your temples or simply breathe in deeply from the bottle.


LEMON. Lemon essential oil has so many applications and is one of the most useful essential oils to have on hand! Cold pressed from the rind, this oil's fresh, zesty aroma is refreshing and its naturally occurring d-limonene (look that up, so many benefits!!) plays a huge role in whole body wellness. Lemon oil is widely used in skin care to cleanse skin, reduce wrinkles, and even combat acne. Like many of the citrus oils, the fragrance promotes clarity of thought and purpose. 🍋Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 1 drop carrier oil. Caution: possible sun sensitivity.💧Use lemon essential oil as a dietary supplement simply by adding a drop or two to your daily water intake or by taking in a gel capsule.👩🏽🍳 Substitute lemon essential oil for lemon juice or seasoning to flavor foods. 🧽 Use in all natural cleaning recipe: 30 ounce spray bottle half filled with distilled water and half with vinegar, then add 10 drops Lemon & 10 drops Thieves (our next oil up on the list!).

THIEVES. No, they didn't cold press or distill $$ for this oil... but there is a crazy origin story behind the Thieves name! This oil is the most amazing blend of highly antiviral, antiseptic anti-fungal and anti-infectious essential oils (claims supported by studies of the late 1990s). It includes Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. This proprietary Young Living (YL) blend was created from research based on legends about 15th century thieves who rubbed botanicals on themselves to successfully avoid contacting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. {{Nice image, huh?!}} Story aside, this blend smells divine and I use it all over the house. Most people search out YL just to get their hands on this amazing oil and all of the related Thieves products for home care and cleaning (addicting? heck yes!). 💰Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 4 drops carrier oil. Caution: possible sun/skin sensitivity. 🧽 Thieves oil makes a wonderful all purpose cleaning spray. Mix 5-10 drops of Thieves oil in a spray bottle and fill with water. Use to clean counter tops or other surfaces.🦶🏽Dilute thieves and rub on bottoms of feet to help promote wellness and boost your immune system.🦠 Fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma! Diffuse in main living areas of your home to neutralize germs and ground your senses.

PANAWAY PanAway is a YL proprietary essential oil blend that is great to use following physical activity. It is a blend of Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove and Peppermint. It helps to reduce pain, increase circulation, accelerate healing; and can also relieve swelling and discomfort from arthritis, sprains, muscle spasms, and cramps. ⛹🏼♀️Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 4 drops carrier oil. Possible skin sensitivity and not recommended for use with kids under the age of six. 🚴🏽♀️ Apply topically after a strenuous workout to help with overworked muscles.🦶🏾Apply several drops to bottoms of feet for a soothing foot massage.🌔 Place 3-4 drops onto a hot towel and hold over the abdomen for cramping (yup, those kind).

RAVEN The oils of Raven blend: Camphor, Lemon, Wintergreen, Peppermint and Eucalyptus Radiata, help to fight respiratory disease and infections. It sounds like a wine when I describe it, "a chilly, minty blend with sweet undertones"! It is a must have to promote respiratory wellness especially in the winter months. Diffusing at night helps support respiratory discomfort. Typically applied to the chest and throat, the cooling and comforting aroma is great after a workout or as part of your evening cool down.💨 Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 1 drops carrier oil. Caution: Possible sun/skin sensitivity and not recommended for kids under six.
❄️Inhale directly from the bottle or add to a carrier oil and rub on the chest and throat area to promote respiratory wellness all winter long.🚿 Place a few drops in the shower for a spa-like experience. Or combine 5 drops of Raven with ½ cup of Epsom salt and toss into the tub! 🏡 "Nestle Down" diffuser blend: 3 drops Raven + 2 drops Frankincense + 2 drops Lavender + 2 drops Thieves.

CITRUS FRESH. Citrus Fresh stimulates the right brain to amplify creativity and wellbeing. Cold-pressed from their rinds, this blend of Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin and Spearmint is a great air-purifier. This one finds itself in the studio diffuser QUITE often! 🍊🍋🍈Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 1 drop carrier oil. Caution: Possible sun/skin sensitivity. 🥗 Add zest to chicken, salmon, salads (veggie or fruit based), and marinades to enhance the flavor. 💕 Mix with a little carrier oil to create a perfume! 🎨 Get your creativity going with this uplifting diffuser blend: 3 drops Citrus Fresh + 3 drops Peppermint
DIGIZE. I pronounced this one incorrectly for months... Easiest way to remember is to think of digestion (same "di" sound at the beginning)! This blend helps relieve digestive issues such as heartburn, gas and bloating. It's a complex blend made with Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli essential oils. Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop oil to 4 drops carrier oil. Caution: Possible sun sensitivity.💧Mix it with water and Peppermint Vitality for a refreshing drink (great after a meal).☕️ Make a soothing tea with antioxidant properties by adding honey and DiGize Vitality to a steamy mug of water. 🧻 Upset tummy? Some people find that a roller bottle filled with 10 drops peppermint and 10 drops DiGize with carrier oil helps. Apply clockwise around naval or area of discomfort, and bottoms of feet. {{and honestly, if someone knows why "clockwise", please tell me!!}}

PEACE & CALMING. When my Lavender needs a break, this becomes my #1! Peace & Calming is an amazing blend that includes Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli and Blue Tansy. This oil contributes to emotional well-being and uplifting your energy and has had positive effects reducing stress and anxiety. I have a personal experience with using this oil to combat 'Restless Leg Syndrome' so if that is something you also struggle with, let me know and happy to share my story with you.🧘🏽♀️Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly inhale. STRESS AWAY. This is a gorgeous blend that includes Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea and Lavender. The Lime & Vanilla really make magic happen on this one! And it's just as the name states helping to balance, improve mental response, and restore your calm. When you're feeling a little crazy rub on the stress away! 🏝 Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly inhale. Topically: Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Caution: Possible sun/skin sensitivity.

VALOR. I saved one of THE BEST for last! This Young Living (YL) favorite has has also been a go-to oil for me in 2020. A truly unique blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, Camphor Wood, Geranium, and Frankincense, Valor has a woodsy, grounding aroma. It promotes feelings of courage and bravery. This is a bottle of POSITIVE VIBES for sure!! 💜Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly inhale. Topically: Apply 2–4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for sensitive skin. Caution: Possible sun/skin sensitivity.
🤲🏾 You got this! Drop in your palms, rub together, and deeply inhale when feeling anxious, overwhelmed, discouraged, or are needing to promote feelings of courage and bravery. 🌏 Keep the comfort of home with you on the road by using a personal diffuser in hotel rooms or the car.⌚️ Difficult Conversations: Massage 1–2 drops of Valor essential oil blend on your temples or neck to increase inner strength when it’s time to have a serious talk at work or home.

NINGXIA RED. NingXia Red® is a delicious superfruit beverage that combines whole Ningxia wolfberry puree; a superfruit blend of blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices; natural stevia extract; grape seed extract; pure vanilla extract; and Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine essential oils.
NingXia Red can help prevent against oxidative stress, support eye health, and provide energy throughout the day NingXia Red is delicious on its own, in a smoothie, or with a few drops of your favorite dietary essential oils.
Young Living recommends 2–4 oz. of NingXia Red every day and you can give your daily shot of NingXia Red a little variety! Add 1–2 drops of your favorite Vitality™ essential oil (pairs well with Cinnamon Bark Vitality, Tangerine Vitality, and Black Pepper Vitality). Many folks just store these in the fridge for a cool shot of nutrients!
