Creativity Boosting Essential Oil Diffuser Blends

Oils can evoke a variety of emotions, which is why I absolutely love using them to elevate creativity. I always use them in the art studio and truth be told, I use them daily in my "day job" office as well. Much like we stimulate our sense of vision, essential oils activate our emotional brain via the limbic system. Tapping into this emotional center, you can create or access different moods, energy and memories, unlocking new levels of creativity.

Creativity is the foundation and a primary source for problem-solving, innovation, ideation and play. While I tend to diffuse oils every day, there are very specific ones I use when “full maker-energy” is desired — or required. Depending on my current state, I switch up aromas and blends to create needed into energy, flow and whatever I want to tap into that day.

Here are my TOP FIVE blends for boosting creativity both in my home office and art studio. When choosing your oils, start with the ones that appeal to you the most and slowly experiment from there. I have certainly found it to be true that some oils resonate with some and not with others!

  1. Present Time - A Young Living (YL) blend with sweet and uplifting aromas has my heart when it comes to "studio time." True to its name, it creates a feeling of being in the moment. I find it calming and cheery, helping me to tap into creative bliss and not take myself too seriously. It's got a delicate floral scent that evokes total empowerment. Oils in this blend include sweet almond oil, Bitter Orange (Neroli), Black Spruce, and Ylang Ylang. It's a pricier oil (to be real honest), but I got it for FREE with my Young Living rewards points and I save up for it again and again.  Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 min 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Apply 2-4 drops on sternum and thymus area, neck, forehead or desired location. Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins.
  2. Awaken - Another YL Blend that delivers allllllll the things. This is a super blend of five other Young Living blends: Joy, Forgiveness, Present Time, Dream Catcher, and Harmony. The aroma specifically stimulates right brain creativity and helps to balance the energy centers of the body.  Said to help us tap into our true desires and how best to pursue them, this can strengthen our desire to achieve our fullest potential. Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 min 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Apply 2-4 drops over heart, on wrists, neck, temples, forehead, or desired location. Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins.
  3. Surrender - Sometimes creativity is blocked by negative thoughts of imposter syndrome, a need to control, stress, or other inhibitions.  This YL blend of Lavender, Black Spruce, Roman Chamomile, and other essential oils provide aromas to help cast these tensions and limiting beliefs getting in your way. Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 min 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Apply 2-4 drops directly on forehead, solar plexus, along ear rim, chest, nape of neck, and desired location.  Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin.
  4. Dream Catcher - Blended to create an atmosphere of inspiration, innovation, and artistry, this amazing YL blend is aptly named! Sacred Sandalwood, Tangerine, Black Pepper, Bergamot, Anise, Juniper, Geranium, Blue Cypress, Davana, Citrus Hystrix, German Chamomile, Blue Tansy, Rose, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Spearmint, and Jasmine help you erase negative thinking and get ideas flowing.   Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 min 3 times daily or directly to inhale. 5. Envision - With Black Spruce, Geranium, Orange, Lavender Sage, and Rose, this YL blend will help you focus while stimulating feelings of creativity and resourcefulness. Said to help clarity and vision when creating goals, this is a great blend to diffuse to amp up your drive to create your future. Add a drop to the palms of your hands, rub them together, and hold them up to your nose and inhale. As you inhale, read your goals and take in Envision’s amazing aroma.  Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 min 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with 1 drop carrier oil and apply to forehead, edge of ears, wrists, neck, temples, or on desired locations.

How to Use Oils

Aromatic: I am a huge fan of diffusing oils, especially in the studio or office. Either by using just one of the above oils or combining a few for a custom blend, it’s easy to “set and forget” (most diffusers have an auto-off function when the water runs out or you can set a specific mist schedule). The mist is also just the coolest vibe and I find the visual swirls floating around the space visually intoxicating. Alternatively, you can simply inhale the oil’s aroma from the bottle or use a cotton ball to absorb a small amount for your space. This is my absolute favorite diffuser (pricey but transportive and sooooo worth it!) Buy it with this starter bundle and the oils are almost free! Topically: Oils can also be used directly on your body. Use the oil bottle directly, or if the oil requires a carrier oil, fill a roller bottle with the recommended mix. Apply the oil directly on your flex points (e.g., wrists, behind your ears or neck). Some oils are extremely potent and may require a carrier oil such as avocado, coconut, or jojoba.
{Note: Some oils are also used internally. Since none of the above oils discussed above are recommended for this use however, I won't go into it here! Young Living has a line of Vitality™  Oils that follow FDA guidelines and I would be happy to share more if you're interested.}

Make it Your Own

Much like the creative process is individual, so are your oily preferences. Depending on what you’re working on (or processing through) there is an oil that may help. What works well for you may not work well for others and vice-a-versa. When choosing your oils start with the ones that appeal to you the most and slowly experiment from there. These YL blends are amazing, but don’t be shy about making some of your own to see which recipes hold power for you!
