Ground Yourself: Top Ten Essential Oils for Grounding

Simply put, grounding is the process of connection. Much like the term “grounded” is used in physics as a reference point to a direct physical connection to the earth, I believe that when you tap into your authentic grounded place, potential and possibilities are endless. When you’re grounded, you make better choices, spend your time more intentionally, add more value, give abundantly to others, and have way more fun.  When you’re connected to this place, everything flows. Especially courage and creativity.
This mission of Grounded Place has really expanded over the past few years and is now connected directly to using essential oils and plant-based products. I can’t wait to share my 10 favorite grounding oils with you today! Depending on what “grounding” means for you, some essential oils may resonate for you more so than others. For some, it may be the woodsy aroma grounding you in the physical connection to our earth. For others, an emotional grounding to a familiar floral scent. Oils may also support a deeper connection with spirit and/or the universal energies.
Some of the grounding oils are very pungent, so blending may be useful to help make them more palatable to your sense of smell. Because aromas can evoke powerful responses in our limbic system in the brain (where we process emotion), it is important to work with smells you like.
The essential oils community is no stranger to the concept of grounding:

Grounding and being grounded is a term in aromatherapy used to mean connecting with the present, being in the now and physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and energetically rooted.

Grounding refers to a state of being in our world on multiple levels:

Physically grounded – our connection to Earth

Emotionally grounded – where our thoughts and emotions move freely and without restriction

Spiritually grounded – where our connection to our “spirit” or “source” is open and abundant

Many of the grounding oils come from trees, barks and resins, which makes logical sense. We know that trees are intrinsically grounded through their root structure into the Earth. However, we may also become ungrounded through illogical thought patterns, stress and anxiousness so essential oils that help with such conditions should also be considered.

The grounding aromas of essential oils can be a welcome addition to your daily routine, whether you need a pick-me-up or away to unwind—or anything in between.

Here are 10 of my personal favorite grounding Young Living (YL) oils and proprietary blends just to get you started:

    • Grounding™ essential oil blend - Of course YL has a blend named Grounding! This is a unique combination of White Fir, Black Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Pine, and other essential oils. It complements feelings of stability, clarity, and spirituality. Grounding’s warm and entrancing aroma can create an atmosphere that is perfect for finding self-awareness and confronting negative emotions. Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 minutes 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with carrier oil and apply 1-2 drops behind ears, on wrists, temples, base of spine or desired location. Possible skin/sun sensitivity.
    • Ylang Ylang - Steam distilled from flowers of trees grown in Ecuador and Madagascar, this essential oil has a sweet, romantic aroma and moisturizing properties, making it a key ingredient in many luxury skin and hair products. It’s name means “flower of flowers” and it said to balance male-female energies, enhance spiritual attunement, increase focus and filter out negative energy. Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with carrier oil and apply 1-2 drops on location, chakras or flex points. Use sparingly if you have low blood pressure.
    • Frankincense - I was super curious about this one and have found it to be quite amazing for both grounding and unlocking creativity. Said to have a calming effect on the body’s nervous system and on the mind, helping to alleviate those feelings of overwhelm. The fragrant influence of this ancient oil is also said to increase spiritual awareness and promote meditation. Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Apply 2-4 drops on location, chakras or flex points. Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins.
    • Highest Potential™ - This blend harmonizes several grounding, calming, inspiring and uplifting essential oils into one blend. Said to elevate the mind and help you gather the thoughts and mental energy needed to achieve your highest potential. The oils contains 22 oils (too many to list!) with a few notables including Blue Cypress, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Cedarwood, and Lavender. Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 minutes 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with carrier oil and apply 1-2 drops behind ears, on wrists, temples, base of spine or desired location. Possible skin/sun sensitivity.
    • Lime - This oil is grounding for me personally because it reminds me of all things summer (well… and maybe some margaritas, if I’m honest!) Lime cleanses the heart, encouraging a joy and cheer for life. If you are feeling grief, resignation and apathy, Lime can encourage emotional honesty and encourage a balance between the heart and mind. Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with carrier oil and apply 1-2 drops on location, chakras or flex points. Possible sun sensitivity.
    • Bergamot - If our thought patterns are negative and self-judging, they can produce anxiousness and unknown fears. These conditions keep us disconnected and ungrounded. Bergamot is a powerful cleanser, creating movement in our energy system to bring hope. Useful to release pent up feelings. (Also great for unleashing creativity!) Citrus aroma derived from the yellow-green peel of this orange-shaped fruit is cold pressed to produce pure essential oil. Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilute 1 drop with carrier oil and apply 1-2 drops on location, chakras or flex points. Possible sun sensitivity.
    • Sacred Mountain™ - A blend of Ylang Ylang, Black Spruce, Balsam and Cedarwood that evokes the sense of sanctity found in nature and promotes feelings of strength, empowerment, grounding, and protection when diffused. You may feel like you are in a sacred environment, especially if earth grounding is important to your practice. Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins. Possible sun sensitivity.
    • Lavender essential oil is calming, relaxing and balancing, which is great for both grounding and winding-down (my evening relaxation go-to!). It has also been documented to improve concentration and mental acuity making it a valuable oily support tool. It will increase your sense of vitality and help you to think more clearly. This oil comes in the  Make a Shift Starter Kit Aromatic: diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins.
    • Valor essential oil blend is one of YL’s most popular blend. Its woodsy, positive scent comes from a blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, and Frankincense. As the name connotes, this oil increases feelings of courage, strength and self-esteem — your ability to tap into your own internal resources. Topically: Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins. Apply generously to feet, wrists, shoulders, back of neck, or desired area.
    • White Angelica - With the aroma of White Angelica essential oil blend, you can create a positive atmosphere and inspire feelings of security and optimism. Neutralizing negative energies, this blend provides a feeling of wholeness. The 10 essential oils in this blend include: Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Melissa, and Rose providing sweet, floral notes; Bergamot and Melissa offer a boost of bright citrus; and Myrrh, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Hyssop, and Sacred Sandalwood balance the blend with a warm, woodsy base. Aromatic: diffuse up to 30 minutes 3 times daily or directly to inhale. Topically: Dilution not required except for the most sensitive skins. Possible sun sensitivity.

How to Use Oils

Aromatic: I am a huge fan of diffusing oils, especially in the studio or office. Either by using just one of the above oils or combining a few for a custom blend, it’s easy to “set and forget” (most diffusers have an auto-off function when the water runs out or you can set a specific mist schedule). The mist is also just the coolest vibe and I find the visual swirls floating around the space visually intoxicating. Alternatively, you can simply inhale the oil’s aroma from the bottle or use a cotton ball to absorb a small amount for your space. This is my absolute favorite diffuser (pricey but transportive and sooooo worth it!) Buy it with this starter bundle and the oils are almost free! Don't forget to use my code for 10% off your first order of 50PV or more SHAREYL
Topically: Oils can also be used directly on your body. Use the oil bottle directly, or if the oil requires a carrier oil, fill a roller bottle with the recommended mix. Apply the oil directly on your flex points (e.g., wrists, behind your ears or neck). Some oils are extremely potent and may require a carrier oil such as avocado, coconut, or jojoba.
Make it Your Own
Much like the creative process is individual, so are your oily preferences. Depending on what you’re working on (or processing through) there is an oil that may help. What works well for you may not work well for others and vice-a-versa. When choosing your oils start with the ones that appeal to you the most and slowly experiment from there. The YL blends are amazing, but don’t be shy about making some of your own to see which recipes hold power for you!
